County officials making visits to select court case management software vendor
GENEVA – Kane County officials involved in choosing a new electronic court case document management system have begun making site visits as part of the selection process.
Chief Judge Judith Brawka told the Kane County Board’s Judicial and Public Safety Committee on Friday that the in-person visits are a way to avoid past mistakes and make sure the chosen system will be able to meet the county’s needs.
“Whichever vendor we choose will be a great improvement from what we have,” Circuit Clerk Tom Hartwell said.
Officials at the various offices associated with the court system – including the county’s chief judge, state’s attorney and public defender – have pushed for years to replace the courts’ current systems, which they say are outdated and dysfunctional.
As part of the project, the Judicial and Public Safety Technology Commission is asking the county board to approve budget adjustments in two areas.
Of the $100,000 of cash on hand budgeted for 2014, the commission is requesting $80,000 be moved to contractual/consulting services.
These funds will go toward contractors needed for technical systems, data conversion and contract negotiation expenses related to the project.
“We do this once every 15 years,” Hartwell said. “These negotiators do this every week.”
The transfer of $20,000 to the budget line for conferences and meetings also is being requested. This will go toward travel expenses to view other case management systems and vendors.
The requests were forwarded to the board’s finance committee for review.
