Saturday's prep roundup: Marmion wrestling completes daunting stretch

AURORA – The Marmion wrestling team capped a daunting stretch Saturday by splitting home duals against Westerville North (Ohio) and Montini.

The Cadets, fielding less than a full lineup as a handful of starters return to health, lost to the Suburban Christian Conference rival Broncos by eight points.

"Overall, I'm very excited about the way our team looked," Cadets coach Ryan Cumbee said. "I think our boys are ready."

Marmion defeated Mount Carmel, 40-30, at home on Thursday, winning nine of the 10 contested bouts. On Friday, the Cadets defeated visiting Baylor (Tenn.), 38-24. Baylor, a boarding school in Chattanooga, Tenn., has won seven dual state championships since 2001.

Lincoln-Way East Illini Classic: At Frankfort, St. Charles East produced four runners-up to place fourth in the 16-team event, in which all coaches were former University of Illinois wrestlers.

The Saints' second-place finishers were: Anthony Rubino (113 pounds), Isaiah Vela (138), Keone Derain (152) and Ramon Lopez (160).

Batavia tournament: At Batavia, host Batavia finished seventh out of 18 teams behind champion Noah Frazier (195 pounds) and runner-up Connor McKeehan (220).

Margaret Flott Memorial Tournament: Kaneland placed second in the six-team tournament, led by a championship at 182 pounds from Zach Parker. The Knights (170.5) were runners-up to Niles North (189).

Dundee-Crown quad: Geneva beat Marian Central and Rockford Boylan but lost to Dundee-Crown. The Vikings' Nick Anderson (120 pounds) won by decision against Marian, by fall against Dundee-Crown and took a forfeit over Boylan.

Lisle Melichar Invitational: At Lisle, Aurora Central Catholic finished sixth in the 10-team event. Caleb Park (126 pounds) and Eddie Gonzalez (285) won titles for the Chargers.

BOYS BOWLING

DeKalb Regional: At Mardi Gras Lanes in DeKalb, St. Charles East (third, 6,086) and St. Charles North (fourth, 6,031) earned the final two qualifying spots to next week's Rockford Boylan Sectional at Park Lanes in Loves Park.

East was led by Chase Wealther (1,331 series) and Aaron Mudlong (1,273), while Isaac Marshall (1,283) and Alex Mundt (1,252) paced North.

Geneva's Evan Schmidt (1,201) and Jason Soto (1,191) advanced as individuals.

GIRLS BOWLING

Hinsdale Central Invitational: At Suburbanite Bowl in Westmont, St. Charles North won the invite with a team score of 5,560. Runner-up Richards rolled a 5,292.

North's Bobbi Jo Buhlman had a 1,267 in six games, registering the top overall series. Teammate Mari Elias (1,201) was next. Elias rolled the day's high game with a 266, while Buhlman followed with a 256.

GIRLS GYMNASTICS

Vikings Invitational: Geneva won the 13-team event, led by Dominique Brognia (first place in all-around, 35.925). The Vikings' team score of 108.725 topped runners-up Hersey (102.45).

BOYS BASKETBALL

Aurora Christian 77, Walther Christian 60: At Melrose Park, five players scored in double figures for Aurora Christian (11-7, 3-3 SCC), led by RD Lutze (16 points) and Wes Wolfe (15).

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Aurora Christian 84, IMSA 17: At Aurora, Alyssa Andersen had 24 points and six steals as Aurora Christian (11-9) dominated.
