Kaneland Connection: 'Huge honor' for Harter jazz band

Middle school group to perform at state music conference

SUGAR GROVE – Rebecca Anderson was at a music conference, listening to middle school jazz bands perform, when she had a thought about the Kaneland Harter Middle School Jazz Band, which she directs.

"I thought, you know, 'I think we have the kids to do this,'" Anderson said. She was right.

The Harter jazz band will perform Friday at the annual Illinois Music Education Association Conference in Peoria. Anderson said it's a first for the Harter jazz band, and it "ranks up there pretty high" among the honors the band has achieved.

The band will perform along with a band from Paris High School, she said. The bands will perform separately and also will combine for one song.

The process started last year in January. Anderson had the group prepare an audition tape, which she submitted. She notes there are many changes since then, as some of the band members at the time were eighth-graders who have moved on to high school. This year's band includes 29 students, including one sixth-grader. The rest are seventh- and eighth-graders.

"This is a huge honor for both our district and this group of students," Anderson said.

Kindergarten registration

Kaneland has planned its 2014 Kindergarten Registration and Literacy Fair from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Feb. 8 in the cafeteria at Kaneland High School, 47W326 Keslinger Road, Maple Park.

Students with last names beginning with the letters A-H will register from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Students with last names beginning with the letters I-O will register from 9:30 to 11 a.m. And students with last names beginning with the letters P-Z will register from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Parents will need to bring an original and a photocopy of a driver's license, the child's birth certificate and proof of residency.

There will be information booths on such topics as rhyming, transportation, motor skills and what to expect in kindergarten.

For information, call Sarah Mumm, director of curriculum, at 630-365-5111, ext. 112.
