Athlete of the Week

KCChronicle.com/preps Athlete of the Week: Batavia girls basketball's Liza Fruendt

Why she was selected: Scored a career and school-best 51 points in Friday's win at Geneva

The line rationalizing Liza Fruendt's selection as the most recent Kane County Chronicle-St. Charles Bank & Trust Athlete of the Week could be much longer. In addition to her 51-point outburst against Geneva, Fruendt scored 30 points in a Jan. 15 win at St. Charles East that saw her become the program's all-time leading scorer. On Monday, she added 22 points to keep Batavia close in an eventual loss to Joliet Catholic. Chronicle sports reporter Kevin Druley caught up with Fruendt about her feats. Here's an edited transcript:

Has the hoopla from the past week changed at all now that you're a few days removed from it?

It was crazy, obviously, but I'm just thankful to be where I'm at and happy to have the support behind us winning, and me reaching whatever. There's just such an awesome support group, and it's been fun.

[Former Batavia boys standout] Corey Williams reached out to [girls coach Kevin] Jensen on Facebook to confirm that your 51 points are tops for boys and girls at Batavia. Do you know Corey?

No, I don't. I saw the thing on Facebook, but that's about it. I don't know him personally. ... It was cool just to see him being interested and talking about old basketball memories.

What do you take away from the Joliet Catholic game?

We keep having these games where we're so close, but obviously, we're playing such good competition that, in the end, I think it's only going to help us when we get to the time of regionals, sectionals.
