Kane County leaders ponder concealed-carry policy

GENEVA – Kane County’s law enforcement leaders – the chief judge, state’s attorney and sheriff – are seeking input from county board members about its concealed-carry policy.

Sheila McCraven, the county’s executive director of human resources, brought this request Wednesday to the Human Services Committee.

The county could adopt the state statute, she said, or it could be more restrictive.

McCraven noted other counties appear to be in similar situations, as she’s gotten calls asking about Kane County’s approach.

“This does raise a lot of questions,” said committee chair Cristina Castro, D-Elgin.

She cited such factors as the county’s liability and limitations on employees.

“We have to look at everybody’s safety,” she said.

Melisa Taylor, R-Sugar Grove, said the policy must be consistent throughout the county’s buildings.

Michael Kenyon, R-South Elgin, said there is no reason someone would need a gun at a county building.

“We don’t need to look for trouble,” he said.

Without having a policy in hand, Castro said, it’s difficult for board members to make a decision. She suggested the State’s Attorney’s Office provide a draft the committee can review and modify.

She requested that McCraven participate in the process so she can provide perspective from the employees and human resources.
