Saturday's prep roundup: Diddell helps Kaneland wrestling take sixth at NI Big 12 meet

STERLING – Kaneland senior 285-pound wrestler Justin Diddell capped a solid week with a Northern Illinois Big 12 championship Saturday.

Diddell, who committed to the Indiana State football program earlier in the week, scored the Knights' top finish and earned falls in each of his three matches, including a win in 3:21 against DeKalb's Alex Roach in the title bout.

"Justin had an awesome tournament," Knights coach Monty Jahns said. "He's moving much better. He's moving his feet, he's using his hands and he's taking his opportunities when he gets them."

Kaneland finished sixth in the 12-team race, 2.5 points ahead of host Sterling.

Austin Parks placed third at 160, Matthew Redman was fourth at 126 and Adam Mish took fifth at 113.

"It's respectable for us," Jahns said. "We ended up probably where we thought we'd be."

Geneva's Soto state-bound:
At Park Lanes in Loves Park, Geneva senior Jason Soto rolled a 1,352 series in six games to advance to next weekend's state tournament at downstate St. Clair Bowl.

Sycamore won the team title, topping a field that included St. Charles East and St. Charles North.

St. Charles North 67, Larkin 47:
At St. Charles, North used strong efforts from Morgan Rosencrants (22 points) and Nichole Davidson (18) to cruise. The North Stars (11-11, 5-4 Upstate Eight Conference River Division) led, 35-18, at the break.

Rochelle 65, Kaneland 55: At Rochelle, Kaneland fell to 9-12 and 2-3 in the NI Big 12 East despite three double-digit scorers. Amber Winquist-Bailey led the Knights with 16 points, while Ally Van Bogaert (15) and Kelly Wallner (10) were next. Kaneland finished 8 for 18 from 3-point range, including a 3 for 4 effort from Van Bogaert.

Wheaton Academy 48, St. Francis 35: At West Chicago, Jamie Netzley (16 points) and Molly Thorson (14) showcased their prowess from long range to boost Wheaton Academy to a Suburban Christian Conference win. The pair finished a combined 9 for 16 from 3-point land.

Marian Central 43, Aurora Christian 39: At Aurora, ACS fell to 12-10 after a SCC loss.
