The following is what our readers sounded off about this week:
Another good business closing
Just finishing the paper, and here is another one for you here. Several restaurants have closed in Batavia, and now Great Harvest Bread in Geneva. Like the guy said, it's hard getting up at 3 o'clock in the morning and not having a vacation for three years. Heaven forbid that the public schoolteachers just can't get ahead in this world while the rest of us do without. It's not only vacations. This was a great little business that I am going to miss. There are too many businesses moving out of Geneva and Batavia. It's going to start hurting the homeowners, and the city is going to get their taxes from somebody, and obviously it's going to be us.
Not on the right track
It appears that Geneva Library Board Trustee Susan Shivers is the only one on the board with good common sense. Our family has lived in Geneva for almost 50 years, and over the years we have made modest donations to the library. But no more – not until they get their fiscal house in order. And from what I read in the paper, it doesn't sound like they are on the right track.
That is ridiculous
I do not understand why the Geneva Library [District] has a consultant. Why does the library director need help? If he cannot handle the job, get someone else – $100,00 a year? That is ridiculous. I can't see it.
Support for Shivers
I support Susan Shivers' comments about the library board. How else do we find out what's going on? We pay the director big money for a job he's supposed to be doing, instead of hiring a consultant for him. Politicians take the money, and then [forget] the taxpayers. Do not support a new library. Go electronic.
I would like to complain about the White Castle in Batavia closing. Good riddance. I am so sick of all those burgers. They might as well put a roll of toilet paper instead of napkins in their bags.
Stop talking about Rauner’s money
The Illinois GOP has a chance to retake the Illinois governor’s office. But all the candidates talk about is the wealth of Bruce Rauner. He earned his millions legally and has donated millions to his favorite institution, especially education. Kirk Dillard has been part of the Springfield good ol’ boys. What can he do? He has done nothing to stop Madigan and the Democrats from controlling the finances of Illinois. Brady has lost two elections and has shown he cannot operate a business very well, especially in a recession – just what Illinois needs to get the state out of financial trouble. The third candidate for the GOP governor is unknown. If the GOP wants to win the governor of Illinois, they must stop mentioning Rauner’s money and get to the issues that are affecting Illinois.
An Illinois legislator was on the radio today. His biggest concern seemed to be Metra's weather-related problems. He then discussed raising the state's income tax because ours is not the highest. Is he aware that not all states even have an income tax? Then he discussed taxing services. The most obvious one is to tax Internet purchases. You hear very little about this, and I do wonder why.
Feel bad for the victims
Unbelievable. I read in the paper about the poor fellow in Ohio. It took 25 minutes for him to die. Wait a minute. How long did the state of Ohio take to clothe and feed him? Wow, they finally put him down. How long did his victim suffer before she went to her untimely death? Come on, bleeding hearts, remember John Gacy. Felt bad for him also? He only killed [30-something] young men. Do I feel bad? No way. Let's feel bad for the victims. Our society is really screwed up.
