GENEVA – A new franchise of Hand and Stone Massage and Facial Spa is scheduled to open May 1 at 11416-A S. Randall Road in the Randall Square Shopping Center in Geneva.
Local franchisees Michael and Kathy Hendershott of Blackberry Township already own a Hand and Stone location in Wheaton.
Kathy Hendershott said they opened the Wheaton location in July and expanded to Geneva.
“We wanted to do something for when my husband decides to retire, so we thought we would go ahead and get started,” Hendershott said. “We saw a franchise consultant, and he gave us five options and we saw the massage business – what better business to make everybody happy? They are happy when they leave. It’s a calm atmosphere and a great atmosphere all around.”
Hand and Stone has 140 franchise locations in 21 states and Canada, according to its website, www.handandstone.com. Physical therapist John Marco started the company in 2005, intending to bring affordable massage and facial services to more people.
“Mike was a regular massage customer. ... I went occasionally,” Hendershott said. “I had never ever done too many facials. Now, I have access to them at our affordable prices. We are a spa.”
Hand and Stone, which is open seven days a week, also does facial peels, microdermabrasion, hair removal and eyelash and eyebrow tinting, she said.
Hendershott said they moved to Geneva 11 years ago from Dallas when her husband was transferred by JP Morgan Chase.
Hendershott said she worked as a purchasing agent in food service manufacturing, but she was allowed to continue working at her company from home until she retired.
The Geneva location will have 3,000 square feet with 11 rooms, three for facials, the rest for massage, including a room for couples, Hendershott said.
Randall Square is anchored by Bed, Bath and Beyond and Old Navy. It is a high-traffic retail corridor, said a spokesman for Baum Realty Group of Chicago, which negotiated the lease.
Kris Smith, director of real estate for Hand and Stone, based in Hamilton, N.J., said Geneva was a good location for the franchise.
“We feel it is a fantastic market,” Smith said. “The demographics of that market exceed our criteria when developing a Hand and Stone Spa, not only in that market, but also in that center.”
