Our View: Success in sports

March Madness is off to a thrilling start for area sports teams as the Geneva and Burlington Central girls basketball teams both compete this weekend in their respective classes of the IHSA State Finals.

We wish the Vikings and the Rockets memorable endings to their dynamite seasons at Redbird Arena in Normal.

While the team achievements of Geneva and Burlington Central girls hoops have been impressive, the area already has celebrated a pair of championship individual performances to wrap up the winter sports season.

Marmion senior Johnny Jimenez recently won his fourth straight IHSA wrestling state title. The St. Charles resident goes down among the most accomplished wrestlers in state history.

The same weekend Jimenez returned to his familiar spot atop the podium at the University of Illinois, Geneva freshman Claire Rose Ginsberg claimed the all-around girls gymnastics state championship in Palatine.

A senior going out on top, and a freshman beginning her career with an early flash of brilliance. The present – and future – of the Tri-Cities sports scene is worth saluting.
