In Focus: Reading Across America

Published: Friday, March 14, 2014 5:30 a.m. CDT

Last week, as part of Read Across America and a celebration of Dr. Seuss’ birthday, I read a story to my 7-year-old nephew and his classmates at Mantua Elementary School in Fairfax, Va., using FaceTime and my iPad. My sister is a teacher at the school, and my fifth-grade niece also got in on the action.

I read the story “The Furry News” by Loreen Leedy, which is about a community newspaper put together by lovable animals. I also showed the students some past editions of the Kane County Chronicle and my cameras.

I’m so grateful I had the opportunity to share my love of newspapers, photography and reading with such a great group of kids.
