GENEVA – The Castronovo family of Geneva has always wanted a retail presence on Third Street.
So when they finally got the chance to make a part of downtown Geneva theirs, Tom Castronovo said they were very careful about who they hired and painstakingly selected the materials for their store, Kilwins Chocolates & Ice Cream.
“You only really get one chance to get it right,” he said.
Kilwins opened last week in Dodson Place on South Third Street, becoming the latest place in Geneva to satisfy a sweet tooth.
In addition to ice cream, it sells Mackinac Island fudge, varieties of caramel corn and peanut brittle and hand-dipped treats, including caramel apples.
The beverage menu includes lemonade, limeade, orangeade, teas, coffees and hot chocolate.
While some of the products are made in Michigan, where Kilwins Chocolate Franchise Inc. is based, about two-thirds of the treats are made at the Geneva store, which has a show kitchen, Castronovo said.
“You can get a wide breadth of product made right in front of you,” he said, adding Kilwins can do custom orders for special events and gifts. “Every day we’re doing something different.”
Castronovo acknowledged that his isn’t the only store in downtown Geneva offering desserts but said he wanted a store on Third Street because he considers it the “go-to shopping district.”
He said he has a lot of respect for the neighboring bakeries and confectioneries, which have their own personality.
“I think it makes downtown more interesting,” he said.
Kilwins, at 407 S. Third St., Suite 186, opens daily at 11 a.m. It is owned by Castronovo and his wife, Cindy.
