Thumbs up to the news this week that the Shodeen family has purchased the old Mill Race Inn.
The Mill Race Inn is a quintessential landmark along the Fox River in downtown Geneva, and it was a substantial blow to the city when the scenic restaurant closed in January 2011. While the Shodeen family’s plans for the property have yet to be made public, Mayor Kevin Burns called the Sho-Deen Inc. purchase “yet another signature project that will beautify the east bank of the Fox River.”
Burns said the project could end up part of a TIF district. While TIF districts are sometimes unpopular with residents, allowing this key location to continue to languish would be a considerably less favorable scenario for the city.
Flooding on the site has been problematic, which surely added to the degree of difficulty in finding a buyer willing to redevelop what otherwise would be considered prime real estate. We’re glad Sho-Deen was willing to take the chance, and hope to see this historic site revitalized so that it once again becomes a tremendous asset for Geneva.
