District 304 hires new transportation director

GENEVA – The Geneva District 304 school board this week approved the hiring of Mary Torrance as its new transportation director.

Torrance’s current position is transportation supervisor, in which she develops bus routes, determines hazard area designations, monitors and evaluates bus driver performance, drives when necessary, coordinates all field trip transportation and assists with the hiring of all new drivers, officials said.

She will begin her $70,000 position on July 1, after current transportation director Bob McElligott retires at the end of the school year after nine years with the district. McElligott’s current salary is $102,500, officials said.

Torrance began working in the district in 1999 as an administrative assistant and dispatcher.

Torrance also trains school bus drivers for the Kane County Regional Office of Education.

In a prepared statement, Superintendent Kent Mutchler said Torrance knows the district’s transportation system “and will do an excellent job in this leadership position.”
