Prep roundup: Batavia softball seizes first win

AURORA – A nine-run seventh inning punctuated an offensive outburst that netted the Batavia softball team its first victory of the season Wednesday.

The Bulldogs pounded 24 hits against Upstate Eight Conference crossover foe Metea Valley in a 19-5 victory.

“It was nice to put up some runs,” Bulldogs coach Lupe Castellanos said. “It was nice to see our girls get some hits, hit the ball hard and score some runs.”

Toni Galas paced Batavia (1-6, 1-3 UEC River), going 5 for 6 with a double, triple and five RBIs. Rachael Lovestrand went the distance to earn her first varsity win and also was 3 for 3 with two doubles and four RBIs.

Castellanos said that apart from Saturday’s doubleheader loss to Kaneland, “we’ve been playing some pretty good ball.”

St. Charles East 18, East Aurora 0 (5 inn.): At Aurora, Alex Latoria, Jordan Hieber and Kelly Rinker struck out 10 in a combined no-hitter for East (10-2, 4-0 UEC River). Hieber went 4 for 4 – including a triple – and drove in four runs.

Wheaton Academy 7, Aurora Central Catholic 3: At Aurora, Angie Graff went 3 for 3 to pace a 15-hit attack for Wheaton Academy (6-2, 4-0 Suburban Christian Conference Gold). Gabi Alfaro doubled for ACC.

BASEBALL

St. Charles East 2, Metea Valley 1: At St. Charles, Adam Eck (1-0) pitched six innings, giving up only one unearned run, and Mick Vyzral worked a 1-2-3 seventh for the save as East (7-2, 3-1 UEC River) won the conference crossover. A two-out single by Mike Settle preceded an RBI double from Austin Regelbrugge and an RBI single from Brannon Barry in the bottom of the third.

Batavia 12, Neuqua Valley 4: At Naperville, Jacob Piechota tripled and drove in three runs for Batavia, which used a 14-hit attack to help winner Evan Acosta move to 3-0. The Bulldogs are 7-1 (3-0 UEC River).

Kaneland 3, Rochelle 0: At Maple Park, Anthony Holubecki (five innings, 10 strikeouts) and Nick Stahl (two innings, three strikeouts) combined on a one-hitter for Kaneland (4-3, 1-0 Northern Illinois Big 12 East). Ty Carlson had two hits, including a double.

Geneva 11, East Aurora 1 (6 inn.): At Geneva, host Geneva rolled in the UEC crossover to improve to 8-0.

Marmion 1, St. Francis 0: At Wheaton, Marmion senior left-hander Alex Troop leaned on his change-up on a windy day against St. Francis, scattering one hit, two walks and nine strikeouts in the shutout. Marmion improved to 4-3 (4-0 SCC Blue).

GIRLS SOCCER

West Aurora Tournament: Kaneland won the tournament, capping its run with an 8-1 win over East Aurora. Madi Jurcenko scored a goal and had two assists as eight girls scored for the Knights (6-1), who went 3-0 in tournament play.

BOYS TENNIS

Oswego 4, Geneva 3: At Oswego, Geneva fell despite top doubles teams Ryan Doeckel and Jason Potts and Brad Burgess and Nick Simone winning in straight sets.

St. Charles East 6, Lake Park 1: At St. Charles, East cruised in a nonconference home dual.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Metea Valley def. St. Charles North, 2-1 (23-25, 25-20, 25-15): At Aurora, North fell to 7-8 despite Jeff Rollins’ 23 assists and 10 digs from Trevor Gonzaga.

St. Francis def. Riverside-Brookfield, 2-0 (25-8, 25-14): At Riverside, Jeff Jendryk (eight blocks, six kills), Robert Smith (18 assists), Greg Churney (seven kills) and Joe Denny (nine service points, four kills) paced St. Francis (8-2).
