Music groups join forces for Operatic Treasures concert

AURORA – The Fox Valley Orchestra, Fox Valley Chorus and the Aurora University Chorale will join forces for Operatic Treasures on Sunday, April 27, in th Crimi Auditorium at Aurora University to perform favorite opera choruses.

The concert will take place at 3 p.m.

The orchestra – under the direction of Dr. Colin Holman – and the chorus – under the direction of Dr. Lisa Fredenburgh – will fill the hall with the sounds of operatic favorites, including Verdi’s “Aida” and “La Traviata,” Donizetti’s “La fille du Regiment,” Weber’s “Der Freischutz,” Wagner’s “Lohengrin” and “Bizet’s Carmen.”  

Featured soloists who will grace the stage for the performance include Sarah Holman, Joshua Baum, Mark Plummer and Kelli Finn.

Also on the program is Michael Zyzak, the first-place winner of the Fox Valley Orchestra Youth Concerto Competition. At 12 years of old, Zyzak was the unanimous winner of the David Popper Cello International Competition in Hungary, and currently studies with Richard Hirschl, cellist for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and faculty member at the Music Institute of Chicago.

Now 16, he recently won the first prize at the Rising Stars Southeast Missouri Competition.  

Sarah Holman is an internationally-known clinician and faculty member at the Wheaton Music Conservatory at Wheaton College. She has appeared with Opera Southwest, Lyric Opera Cleveland, DuPage Opera, Muddy River Opera, Chicago Chamber Opera, City Opera of the Quad Cities and Kansas Opera. Holman recently returned from Changhua, Taiwan, where she was a featured artist and master teacher with the Southern Young Artist Opera Project.  

Baum, a tenor and Aurora University faculty member, will perform “Ah! mes amis;” and baritone Mark Plummer, also a faculty member at Aurora University, will be featured in the “Toreador” song from “Carmen.” Joining Baum for “Brindisi” from “La Traviata” is soprano Kelli Finn.

Tickets purchased for the  Operatic Treasures concert in advance are available on the website www.foxvalleyorchestra.org. Tickets cost $12 for adults and $10 for youths and seniors.

Tickets also can be purchased at the door for $13 for adults and $11 for youths and seniors.
