Prep Roundup: Marmion boys tennis edges St. Francis

AURORA – Marmion maintained its recent edge in Suburban Christian Conference boys tennis with a 3-2 victory against St. Francis Thursday.

Bidding for their sixth straight league title, the Cadets prevailed without Kevin Hoss, the usual half of their No. 1 doubles tandem, who was away on a school band trip.

John King (No.1 singles) and the second doubles pairing of Luke Hoss and Dave Demoll were among the winners for Marmion (4-0, 2-0 SCC).

“We lost some focus and lost some intensity there in a lot of second sets, so you saw a roller coaster within the matches,” Cadets coach John Tsang said. “But it was a very competitive day.”

The Spartans’ Joe Wood won in three sets at No. 2 singles.

Geneva 5, Bartlett 2: At Geneva, Geneva captured three of four doubles matches, including a 6-1, 6-3 win from Brad Burgess and Nick Simone in the No. 2 slot.

Aurora Central Catholic 4, Montini 1: At Oak Brook, ACC No. 1 singles player Jared Cebulski cruised, 6-3, 6-0, as part of the Chargers’ SCC victory.

Kaneland 7, Rochelle 5: At Maple Park, Connor Fedderly went 3 for 3 with two RBIs and Ty Carlson and Nick Stratman had two hits apiece as Kaneland (5-3, 2-0 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) stayed hot.

Marmion 3, St. Edward 1: At Elgin, Marmion pushed across two runs in the top of the seventh in support of winning pitcher Jake Esp. A bases loaded walk by Brady Roberts helped the Cadets (5-3, 5-0 SCC Blue) pull ahead. Brian Simon added two hits and an RBI for Marmion.

Batavia 17, Rosary 4 (5 inn.): At Aurora, Natalie Offutt homered, had two doubles and drove in five as Batavia (2-6) won its second straight, cruising at the West Aurora Invite. Rosary fell to 1-9.

Glenbard North 3, St. Charles East 0: At St. Charles, East (10-3) dropped the nonconference game despite three hits from leadoff batter Tess Hupe.

Burlington Central 8, Richmond-Burton 1: At Burlington, Kassie Gaylord went 3 for 4 with two doubles to boost BC (7-5, 3-0 Big Northern Conference East). Emily Kisch scattered three hits, seven strikeouts and two walks for her fourth win.

Geneva 8, Streamwood 1: At Streamwood, Mary Landry and Michaela Loebel both netted hat tricks for Geneva (6-1-1, 1-0 UEC River).

Kaneland 8, Rochelle 0: At Maple Park, Madi Jurcenko finished with a hat trick for Kaneland (7-1, 2-0 NI Big 12 East), while Brittany Olson scored twice.

Pepsi Invitational: St. Charles North fell to host Loyola, 2-0. North (7-2) allowed one goal in each half.

Aurora Central Catholic 2, Marian Central 1: At Aurora, Jordyn Sundberg scored the game-winner with 35 seconds left to lift ACC (5-1-1, 2-1 SCC) to a dramatic win. Paola Ramos scored off a Sundberg goal to give ACC a 1-0 lead, but Marian tied it on a penalty kick with about 5 minutes to play. Bry Mandarino was credited with 17 saves for the Chargers.
