Prep roundup: Batavia boys tennis tops Geneva

GENEVA – Batavia continued what coach Brad Nelson called a “very enjoyable first part” of the boys tennis season with Tuesday’s 6-1 victory against Geneva.

The Bulldogs (1-0 Upstate Eight Conference River Division) downed the Vikings (2-1) on the strength of a doubles sweep. The tandems of Ryan Sterling and Adam Maris (No. 1) and Josh Boyle and Jeff Lorden (No. 2) – both champions at the recent Maine South Invitational – were among Batavia’s winners.

Batavia improved to 42-5 in doubles play.

“Our doubles have been solid all season long,” Nelson said.

Canan Ciesielski was Geneva’s lone victor, earning a 6-2, 6-2 win at third singles.

St. Charles North 7, South Elgin 0: At South Elgin, North moved to 6-0 in duals with a comfortable conference crossover win. Matt Ernst was a 6-0, 6-0 winner at No. 1 singles.

Marmion 5, Aurora Central Catholic 0: At Aurora, Marmion yielded just nine games in improving to 5-0 (3-0 Suburban Christian Conference). The Cadets’ John Graft and Ricky Angsten won, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 doubles.


Marmion 11, Marian Central 4: At Aurora, Gunnar Stanke struck out six in five innings to earn the victory for Marmion, which scored seven runs in the first inning of the SCC game.

St. Francis 1, Wheaton Academy 0: At Wheaton, host St. Francis scored in the fourth inning en route to a tight SCC win.

Aurora Central Catholic 7, St. Edward 6 (8 inn.): At Aurora, Chris Saltijeral knocked the game-ending hit for ACC (10-7, 4-4 SCC).

Montini 6, Aurora Christian 0: At Aurora, Aurora Christian fell to 6-4 (3-4 SCC) despite two hits from R.D. Lutze.


St. Charles North 14, West Chicago 0 (5 inn.): At West Chicago, North’s Sabrina Rabin struck out nine in a two-hitter. Andrea Beal and Alex Millett both homered for the North Stars (9-5, 5-2 UEC River).

Geneva 6, Metea Valley 0: At Aurora, Geneva’s Anna Geary went 3 for 4 to back Rachel Fanella, who had four strikeouts and two walks in a three-hitter. The Vikings improved to 7-4 (2-2 UEC River).

Batavia 20, East Aurora 1 (5 inn.): At Aurora, Batavia (4-6) scored the game’s final 20 runs, including 14 in the fifth inning. Ryanne Rokos went 4 for 5 with four RBIs. Natalie Offutt and Tara Zufan drove in three runs apiece.

Neuqua Valley 1, St. Charles East 0: At Naperville, Kate Peterburs tripled among her two hits, but East still lost despite Haley Beno’s two-hitter. The Saints are 12-4 (6-1 UEC River).

St. Francis 7, Marian Central 2: At Wheaton, St. Francis won the SCC game to move to 10-2.


Burlington Central 1, Richmond-Burton 0: At Burlington, Alyssa Messina scored on a second-half feed from Brittany Bourdage as BC (4-3-2, 3-0-1 Big Northern Conference East) earned a shutout behind Abbi Ciganek.

Aurora Central Catholic 4, Chicago Christian 0: At Aurora, Jordyn Sundberg tallied a hat trick for ACC (6-1-1, 3-1 SCC) as Bry Mandarino made 10 saves for her sixth shutout.

St. Francis 4, IC Catholic Prep 0: At Wheaton, Bri Miulli earned the shutout for St. Francis (3-4-1, 3-1 SCC).


St. Charles North def. Elgin, 2-0 (25-14, 25-17): At Elgin, Jeff Rollins powered North (8-9, 1-0 UEC River) with 19 assists, eight kills and seven digs. Drew Lanz added 13 digs.

St. Charles East def. Streamwood, 2-0 (25-21, 25-23): At Streamwood, Joseph Leaman (15 digs) and Luke Spicer (11 kills) paced East.

Geneva def. Larkin, 2-0 (25-23, 25-16): At Geneva, David Franz (19 assists) and Chris Parrilli (nine kills) helped Geneva win its league opener.


Yorkville 80, Kaneland 65: At Maple Park, Kaneland’s Nicole Sreenan won the 100 meters (12.86) and 400 (58.69).


St. Charles North 10, Wheaton North 4: At East Side Sports Complex in St. Charles, North earned a home victory.


Naperville Central 9, St. Charles North 4: At St. Charles, Chris Stanek scored twice for 15-6-1 North, while Ross Davis had two assists and two steals.


East Aurora 10, St. Charles East 5: At St. Charles, East’s Cate Strahl earned a win at No. 3 singles.
