Clerk charged with felony theft at Geneva store

GENEVA – An employee of Dick's Sporting Goods has been charged with two felony counts of theft of more than $500 in merchandise at the store, according to police reports. The store is at 618 Commons Drive, Geneva.

Jeremy J. Smet, 22, of the 900 block of Woodhollow Lane, Bartlett, was charged April 15 with theft by unauthorized control of merchandise and theft by deception to gain that control.

The charges carry penalties of two to five years in prison and a fine up to $25,000. Smet was released on his personal recognizance and is scheduled to appear in court May 14, records show.

According to police reports, the charges stem from the store's own investigation of six suspicious merchandise returns by Smet from Feb. 8 to April 7. Store credit gift cards were issued in the amount of  $541.24.
