The following is what our readers sounded off about this week:
Check your facts This message is to the person who called in, "Who wants to work?" He talked about the unemployment and the Democrats or whatever. I know what it's like to need the unemployment. When you turn 62 and you lose your job after 25 years, of no fault of your own, the employer pays the unemployment. It's not coming out of your tax dollars. Next time you sound off, please check your facts first.
Tax on texting? I was just sitting here thinking that since Gov. Quinn is so tax-happy and adding taxes onto everything else, if he really wanted to do something constructive, he should tax the people texting. That would be a fantastic thing for him to create some stupid revenue for what he is trying to do.
Clubs for baby boomers The Catholic churches, the only time they're busy at Mass is Easter and Christmas. I can see why attendance is down. As a baby boomer myself, they have no clubs for us. They have senior groups, but basically the people who run the senior groups are much older. I'm in my early 50s. I do get along with people in their 70s and 80s, but I want a club, basically for the younger generation that enjoys going to different events. Why doesn't the Catholic church start one up?
The price of Easter lamb cakes Why are the Easter lamb cakes that you buy in a store so expensive? Most of it is frosting. The stores are making a big profit. We don't buy one for Easter Sunday. We go the next day and get it for half-price. We are not poor. We are comfortable. But we can't see paying $14 for frosting for a lamb cake. The stores are just charging outrageous prices. They wonder why they don't have any business. With the many different stores in the Tri-Cities area, you can go anywhere. You don't have to go to the same store all the time. But no matter where you go, the Easter lambs are pricey.
Lots of luck on the stop sign The politicians always have an out when it comes to doing something for the citizens. I requested that they take down some of the stop signs between some of the ... schools, but no answer back. The law says if they are of no use of what they are intended for, they should come down. Lots of luck, [Ms.] Anderson, on your stop signs.
Watch your kid I am not in support of a stop sign on Third Street in Geneva. The mom whose child ran into the street needs to be putting a 2-year-old into a stroller. Two-year-olds shouldn't be roaming free around street areas.
Be careful As a car lover and gear head, which I am, I was very disappointed when General Motors went broke because of poor quality. The poor quality was kind of caused by the company and the union producing the quality. The poor quality has now killed 12 people, and government motors is under investigation by Congress. In addition, the poor quality has continued. They just had a recall of 7 million cars. As a car guy and gear head, they have absolutely demonstrated an inability to produce safe vehicles. I would suggest refraining of purchasing all GM cars for the foreseeable future. This is from a car guy in a car family. Hopefully, you'll go along with that and be safe.
Abide by our laws Easter weekend brought [at least] eight people killed in Chicago and [at least] 30 people wounded. And Mayor Rahm Emanuel is raising Cain about guns. Actually, Chicago and all of these other towns that are bereaved by gang violence and lawlessness and gun violence, are the same ones who are promoting illegal immigration and saying give these illegal immigrants a chance, and give them driver's licenses. When you breed a disrespect for the law, how can you expect people to obey the law? How can you expect people to have any morals or ethics whatsoever? They want to talk about disarming a law-abiding citizen, when, in fact, Chicago and Illinois have some of the strictest gun laws in the country. And because Chicago and other parts of the state breed this lawlessness, this contempt for the law by allowing illegal immigration and allowing gang bangers and allowing all this stuff and being easy on these people who break the law, they're just promoting it. Let's get off of the backs of the law-abiding citizens. Let's get tough on the law breakers, the illegal immigrants. Let them know if they come to the United States, they need to abide by our laws and become Americans and be Americans first ...
