ACC girls soccer falls in postseason opener

HINCKLEY – Aurora Central Catholic girls soccer coach Kristy Kane complemented Hinckley-Big Rock's "great speed and really talented seniors" after the host Royals defeated ACC, 2-0, in a 1A regional semifinal Tuesday.

That didn't mean Kane was lacking praise for her own team.

The youthful Chargers finished 8-6-2 in Kane's debut season at the helm after a stint at nearby Rosary.

"I think we surpassed expectations, for sure, and the kids really grew throughout the season," Kane said, "so I'm really proud of them."

ACC fell behind, 1-0, at halftime, but stayed afloat behind the playmaking of Jordyn Sundberg, who Kane said "always creates something."

Sycamore 2, Kaneland 0: At Sycamore, Kaneland (13-3-2, 7-1-2 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) suffered its first conference defeat of the season. The Knights trailed, 1-0, at halftime.

St. Charles East 0, Neuqua Valley 0: At St. Charles, East (13-4-3) yielded few scoring opportunities to Neuqua Valley in the Upstate Eight Conference crossover draw.

Morris 4, Kaneland 2: At Maple Park, Morris won behind a three-run third inning. Dan Hammermeister had a hit and two RBIs for Kaneland (14-11, 9-5 NI Big 12 East), which was limited to three hits in the game. Nathan Hopkins doubled.

St. Charles North 11, Elgin 1 (6 inn.): At St. Charles, North's Abby Howlett homered and drove in three runs as part of a 4 for 4 day. North (17-6, 13-2 UEC River) cruised behind a 14-hit attack that included a Mickey Goetz home run.

Burlington Central 13, Richmond-Burton 4: At Richmond, Bekah Harnish boosted Central, going 4 for 4 with two home runs and six RBIs. Brooke Gaylord struck out 10 to earn the victory, helping BC improve to 16-7 (9-2 Big Northern Conference East).

St. Charles North 4, Geneva 3: At Geneva, North completed the duals season with a 20-1 record, including a 6-0 mark in UEC River play. The North Stars yielded a combined seven games to win Nos. 2 through 4 doubles. The No. 2 pairing of Mitch Riggs and Keith Hedges won, 6-2, 6-1.

Geneva's Curran McQuilkin and Quade Spellman earned singles victories.

Batavia 7, Larkin 0: At Elgin, Jeff Lorden teamed with Josh Boyle to earn his 82nd career doubles victory and establish a new Batavia record. Singles players Drake Swift and James Carr were among the other winners for Batavia (18-4, 4-2 UEC River).

St. Charles North 10, Waubonsie Valley 7: At Aurora, Zach Behrens scored four goals for North, while Eric Koppang and Dean McBride chipped in two apiece.
