Geneva middle schools announce changes

GENEVA – Geneva School District announced Tuesday its participation in a new middle school athletic conference, effective in the fall.

Beginning in the 2014-15 school year, Geneva Middle Schools North and South will join the Fox River Prairie Conference, which will also include the following schools: Haines, Thompson, and Wredling middle schools in St. Charles; Yorkville Middle School; Kaneland’s Harter Middle School in Sugar Grove; and Rotolo Middle School in Batavia.

“Our athletic programs help our students to develop the many positive character traits that come from belonging to a team,” said Jane Schwartz, assistant principal of Geneva Middle School South. “I’m excited at the prospect of partnering with the other schools in our new conference for the benefit of all students.”

In addition to joining the conference, Geneva Middle Schools North and South will combine their football teams to create one campus middle school team. This same approach was taken this school year with the creation of one campus cheerleading team.

Puou, Deng pick Indiana junior college

MOOSEHEART – Mooseheart boys basketball seniors Mangisto Deng and Makur Puou will each sign a National Junior College Athletics Association Letter of Intent with Vincennes (Indiana) University on May 27, the school announced Tuesday.

Vincennes is a junior college. The signings will take place at 11:45 a.m. in the Mooseheart school building. In addition to Deng and Puou, Mooseheart boys basketball coach Ron Ahrens and Vincennes coach Todd Franklin will be present for the signings.

The natives of South Sudan played two seasons with the Red Ramblers and graduate May 31. Both are two-time Illinois Basketball Coaches Association All-State players.

Puou was a First Team selection both seasons while Deng was selected for the Second Team both seasons.
