BATAVIA – Responding after a skittish start, the Batavia softball team rallied to defeat Metea Valley, 10-4, on Monday and advanced to face host Benet in a 4A regional semifinal today.
Trailing, 1-0, entering the bottom of the fifth of the regional quarterfinal matinee, Batavia (10-19) scored seven times in the inning. Junior catcher Tara Zufan’s grand slam punctuated the frame.
“We broke out the bats in the fifth,” Bulldogs coach Lupe Castellanos said. “The Metea pitcher mixed up speeds on us, kept us off-balance, but the third time around through the order we made a better adjustment. The girls did a better job of letting the ball get deeper through the zone and really put some solid contact on the ball.”
Batavia finished with 10 hits, with Nicole Peercy (two RBIs) and Christina Karius contributing two apiece.
Rachael Lovestrand was the winner, scattering four runs, five hits, six walks and one strikeout in seven innings.

Batavia 12, Wheaton North 5: At Wheaton, Batavia surged to its 20th consecutive win in the regular-season finale. Jeremy Schoessling went 3 for 5 with three RBIs to lead the 29-3-1 Bulldogs.
