Prep Roundup: Young stymies Wheaton Academy as Rosary softball advances

LEMONT – Fueled by Elayne Young's two-hitter and a timely attack, the Rosary softball team topped Wheaton Academy, 8-1, in a Class 3A Lemont Regional semifinal Wednesday.

Young, a junior, scattered four walks and nine strikeouts as the 10-21 Royals advanced to face the host Indians for the regional title at 11 a.m. Saturday.

"Elayne Young really had a nice game for us tonight," Royals coach John Kazmierczak said. "We came out hitting the ball pretty well tonight. We supported her with a lot of defense and a lot of hits."

Rosary had 10 hits and seized early control with a five-run second after the Warriors (14-11) scored a first-inning run. Marissa Gagliano, who reached with a leadoff walk, scored on an infield error.

Sam Phelps was 3 for 4 with four RBIs for Rosary, while Emma Molenhouse went 2 for 4 with three RBIs.

"I don't know if we've ever played Lemont in the history of the program, but we're looking forward to that," Kazmierczak said.

Class 3A Aurora Central Catholic Regional: Riverside-Brookfield 5, Aurora Central Catholic 0: Host ACC was shut out in a season-ending loss.


Class 3A Plano Regional: St. Francis 7, Sandwich 1: Will Purdom and Jake Radel collected two hits apiece for St. Francis (23-10), which advanced to Saturday's regional final against the winner of Friday's Kaneland-Aurora Central Catholic semifinal.

Kaneland picked up a nonconference game against Wheaton Warrenville South on Wednesday, winning, 2-1. The Knights initially were supposed to face ACC today, but the game was moved back due to ACC's graduation.


IHSA Schaumburg Regional final: Buffalo Grove def. St. Charles East, 2-0 (25-18, 25-14): East ended its season at 25-13.

IHSA Metea Valley Regional final: St. Francis def. Glenbard East, 2-0 (25-16, 25-14): At Aurora, St. Charles resident Robert Smith contributed 30 assists for 31-6 St. Francis, which advanced to Friday's Hinsdale Central Sectional semifinal against Glenbard West. Greg Churney added 12 kills.
