GENEVA – Geneva baseball shortstop Nick Derr will transfer to the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, he confirmed to the Chronicle Wednesday.
Derr, a Florida State recruit who just completed his sophomore year at Geneva, spoke briefly by phone before attending a team banquet. He emailed the Chronicle earlier Wednesday, writing that the sports-specialized school would allow him to "train physically and mentally throughout the year and play on IMG's Signature Baseball Team."
Derr suffered a season-ending broken finger in a May 13 loss at Batavia and itched to help the Vikings during the stretch run. Geneva lost to host Lake Park in a 4A regional semifinal last week.
"I wanted to grab a bat and go to the plate in the playoff game, but I couldn't," Derr wrote. "I really believe we could have rallied in the playoffs because my teammates and I were very close to each other. When players play for each other, good things happen. I am going to miss my teammates."
Derr committed to Florida State baseball before his high school baseball career began. Also a member of the football program who quarterbacked the Vikings as an injury replacement for part of the 2012 season, Derr lamented that he would be unable to help Geneva to further gridiron success. He did not play football last year but wrote that he had planned to play next year.
IMG, a sports marketing giant, operates a private sports training center alongside its academic facility.
"I am going to miss the community here in Geneva, my friends, the Geneva high school faculty and my baseball and football teammates," Derr wrote.
