PEORIA – Tuesday’s series opener between the visiting Cougars and Peoria Chiefs was rained out and will be made up as part of a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m. today.
The Cougars and Chiefs will play a pair of seven-inning games, with right-handers Tyler Skulina (4-2, 2.93 ERA) and Daury Torrez (5-3, 3.67) starting for Kane County.
Ryan Sweeney of the parent Cubs was set to start in center field and bat second for the Cougars Tuesday as part of a continuing minor league rehab assignment from a hamstring injury that has kept him out of the lineup since May 2.
The Cougars clinched the Midwest League’s first-half Western Division Title on Saturday and enter play today with a league-best 43-21 record. The club’s 43 first-half wins are tied with the 2004 team for second most in franchise history.
With six games remaining before the All-Star break, the Cougars still can catch or break the 2001 MWL champion Cougars’ mark of 47 wins in the first half.
The Cougars went 28-7 at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark in the first half, winning 10 of 11 series while splitting a four-game set with Quad Cities in mid-May.
