Rally propels Cougars
to split against Peoria
PEORIA – The Cougars rebounded from a skittish offensive performance in the opener of Wednesday’s doubleheader at Peoria, scoring four unanswered runs to win the nightcap, 4-3.
Chiefs right-hander Alex Reyes limited the Cougars to two hits en route to a 2-1 win in the opener, a Jordan Hankins double and a Ben Carhart single. In Game 2, Cougars left fielder Trey Martin robbed the Chiefs’ Carson Kelly of a solo homer to end the sixth. Kane County kept pushing after that, with Jake Hannemann scoring on a game-tying throwing error after leading off the top of the seventh with a double. Hankins’ sacrifice fly scored Carlos Penalver with the go-ahead run.
Rehabbing outfielder Ryan Sweeney of the parent Cubs, out since May 2 with a hamstring injury, went 0 for 3 with a strikeout in Game 1. The Cougars (44-22) will conclude their series with the Chiefs at 7 p.m. today.
