2014 Kane County Chronicle Baseball All-Area Team

Danny Gerke
Burlington Central, Sr., P

Central was 10-1 in games Gerke started and under .500 in those he didn’t. Finished 9-0 with a 0.63 ERA as BC tied Richmond-Burton for the Big Northern Conference East title.

Jacob Piechota
Batavia, Sr., P

One of several senior stalwarts for the Upstate Eight Conference River Division champs, Western Michigan-bound lefty tied for team lead with seven wins while compiling a 1.49 ERA and striking out 68 in 61 innings. Also played first base, hitting .273 with 12 extra-base hits and 31 RBIs.

Alex Troop
Marmion, Sr., P

Michigan State-bound left-hander and Kane County Chronicle Player of the Year also shined in center field or at first base, but made most of his mark on the mound, going 5-0 with a 0.13 ERA. Batted .333 with 13 extra-base hits and 24 RBIs.

Kyle Khoury
St. Charles North, Jr., C

Threw out more than 40 percent of would-be base stealers while exhibiting what coach Todd Genke called “a blocking clinic” on balls in the dirt. Led North in home runs (three), RBIs (22) and doubles (seven) while ranking third with a .362 average.

Micah Coffey
Batavia, Sr., IF

Minnesota recruit shifted to third base from first to help solidify defense and Bulldogs’ bid for special season. Hit .360 with team-best 32 RBIs as Batavia won program-best 32 games and advanced to Class 4A Schaumburg Sectional final.

Nick Derr
Geneva, So., IF

Shortstop sparked the heart of the Vikings’ order and the middle of their defense while batting .372 with seven home runs and 22 RBIs. Suffered a broken finger late in the season and announced he’ll transfer to IMG Academy in Florida in 2014. Committed to Florida State before entering high school.

Hunter Fiorito
Aurora Central Catholic, Jr., IF

Batavia resident delivered after taking part in Prep Baseball Report’s Preseason All-State Exhibition, hitting .540 with five triples and 20 stolen bases as a slick second baseman.

Cory Wright
St. Charles North, Jr., IF/P

Helped steer North to its first regional title since 2010 with arsenal of talent. Went 6-1 with a 1.62 ERA as a top-of-the-rotation lefty and played first base on days he didn’t pitch. Hit .347 with a team-best 28 RBIs as leadoff man. Will eventually take dazzling pickoff move to Kansas State.

Brannon Barry
St. Charles East, Sr., OF

Saints’ vocal leader wasn’t shy in center field or the middle of the order. His .402 average led the team, as Barry also contributed 10 doubles, 18 RBIs and 19 steals. Illinois State football recruit.

Jack Dennis
St. Charles North, Sr., OF

Armed with what Genke called “a sweet swing that squares up a lot of baseballs,” Dennis contributed a .352 average and 19 RBIs to the North Stars’ attack. Strong-armed defender who also saw time at first base.

Laren Eustace
Batavia, Sr., OF

Speedster could change the complexion of innings whenever he reached base or tracked balls in center field. Committed to Indiana, Eustace showed some pop as a leadoff man, too, hitting five home runs with 20 RBIs while batting .419.

Ben Chally
Geneva, Sr., U

Mostly the team’s third baseman, Chally could fill in at a few other positions, too, after early-season injuries beset Geneva. Hit .382 with 37 RBIs while collecting three wins and four saves on the mound.
