Drew Freedlund, 8, of Batavia, won Saturday's Geneva All American Soap Box Derby event in downtown Geneva.

GENEVA – Drew Freedlund, an 8-year-old Batavia resident, emerged as the winner Saturday in the Geneva All American Soap Box Derby event in downtown Geneva, according to a news release sent by the race organizer.

Fourteen competitors vied for the championship, which includes a trip to Akron, Ohio, for the world championship on July 26. Freedlund will compete there against more than 450 others in the event. Saturday's event was in the local stock division.

This is the second year that the soap box race has taken place in Geneva. Last year, Freedlund competed and finished fourth and also won the sportsmanship award, according to the release.
