Police: Motorist with blown-out tire charged with DUI in St. Charles

ST. CHARLES – An Elgin man seen driving erratically with a blown-out tire in St. Charles last week faces charges of drunken driving, according to a St. Charles police report.

Police responded to Route 25 near Fulton Avenue at about 1 p.m. Friday to find the driver of a white minivan apparently asleep at a red light, police said. The van reportedly paused for a couple of seconds after the light turned green, then accelerated sharply.

In addition to making a loud grinding noise and smoke from the acceleration, police said sparks were coming from the vehicle because it was missing its front right tire. The officer turned on the squad car's lights, but instead of yielding to the right, the motorist reportedly jerked to the left so that most of the minivan was in the lane for oncoming traffic.

The minivan continued south before making a wide right turn onto Walnut Avenue, police reported, noting the wide arc resulted in the motorist driving in the wrong lane.

The vehicle eventually stopped in a parking lot, police said.

The driver, Christian Aguinaga, failed field sobriety tests and had a blood-alcohol content of 0.198 percent, more than twice the legal limit of 0.08 percent, police reported.

A witness who saw Aguinaga turn onto Route 25 from Red Gate Bridge told police the minivan was "all over the road," drove off the road, nearly crashed with other vehicles and hit a curb "very hard," police said.

Aguinaga, 23, of the 1100 block of Royal Boulevard, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving with a blood-alcohol content of more than 0.08 percent, driving without insurance and use of an unsafe tire.

He is expected in court Aug. 7 for a plea setting.
