SUGAR GROVE – By the end of the year, the Sugar Grove Police Department plans to expand into space currently occupied by village offices.
The village and the police department currently share a building at 10 S. Municipal Drive. The village recently closed on the purchase of two vacant buildings in a nearby office park that will serve as the new village hall and a small business incubator.
A building at 140 S. Municipal Drive will serve as the new village hall, and a second building at 160 S. Municipal Drive will serve as storage space for the village and an incubator space for a new business.
The police department is in need of more space, Village Administrator Brent Eichelberger said.
"More interview rooms is one of the department's big needs," he said.
Sugar Grove purchased the two 6,000-square-foot buildings along with three building pads and a parking lot for $975,000. Only 3,000 square feet in each building is finished, Eichelberger said.
Eichelberger estimated that it will cost another $400,000 to $500,000 to remodel and furnish the building for use as a village hall. The idea would be to move village hall into the new building by the end of the year, but he said the process shouldn't be rushed.
"We want to make sure we take our time to properly design it," he said. "Rather than move in as is, we want to take our time to develop the best design for that longer term."
The plan would be to use the adjacent building at 160 S. Municipal Drive for storage space and some type of incubator space, Eichelberger said. The village would rent the space to start-up businesses at a reduced market rate.
"It would be a place where start-up small businesses can get some space in an economical way," he said. "We don't want village-owned space to compete with private office space. That's not the goal and the concept."
