Motorcyclists hurt in Hampshire Township crash

HAMPSHIRE TOWNSHIP – Alcohol appears to have played a role in a motorcycle accident Friday that resulted in potentially life-threatening injuries for two men, Kane County Undersheriff Pat Gengler said.

John Beach, 22, of the 13N100 block of Engel Road, Sycamore, and Benjamin Fletcher, 26, of the 43W000 block of Carletta Lane, Elgin, were flown from Presence St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge following the crash in unincorporated Hampshire Township, he said.

Kane County sheriff's deputies and Hampshire police responded to Allen Road east of Walker Road at about 1:50 a.m. for a report of two motorcycles involved in a crash.

Authorities believe the men were traveling together, Gengler said, but they don't know what caused the accident.

"[We] probably need more of the physical evidence to tell us what happened," he said.

As of Friday afternoon, the crashed remained under investigation by sheriff's investigators and members of the Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team.

Gengler said neither man was wearing a helmet, and alcohol appears to have been a factor.

Fletcher was charged with two counts of driving under the influence of alcohol and operating an uninsured vehicle. He was reportedly released on an I-bond at St. Joseph before being flown to Lutheran General.

Beach had not been charged with anything as of Friday afternoon, Gengler said.
