Former Kane County auditor enjoys skydiving adventure at 89

Jumps out of plane in outing with his grandchildren

At the age of 89, former Kane County auditor Gerald Morrow is still full of energy.

“I don’t want to just sit around,” said Morrow, a resident at Plum Landing retirement community in Aurora. “I would like a touch of adventure.”

He got an adventure last weekend when he decided to go skydiving with six of his grandchildren. The skydiving trip was an early Christmas gift for his grandchildren.

“Christmas Day happens to be my birthday,” Morrow said. “I figured for the grandchildren, I would give them a Christmas gift. It had to be something of interest for the kids.”

Morrow and his grandchildren – Anna and Caroline Olson, Hannah and Joe Guimont, and Mitchell and Will Summitt – went to Baldwin, Wisconsin, on Saturday to jump with a skydiving group. The last time Morrow had jumped out of a plane was when he was a World War II paratrooper.

Morrow said he was somewhat inspired by former President George H.W. Bush, who celebrated his 90th birthday in June by skydiving.

“He showed that people our age could still do something active,” Morrow said.

As he jumped from the plane, Morrow said he experienced an “exhilarating” feeling. He said they “went out head first and sort of flipped over.”

But he is not sure he would do it again.

“I’m not making long-range plans at age 90,” Morrow said.

Morrow keeps active in other ways, as well. For instance, he said he plays tennis.

“That’s what keeps me going,” he said. “That’s the activity that keeps me in shape.”

Amanda Castro, marketing coordinator for Plum Landing, was not surprised to hear about Morrow’s skydiving adventure. She knows how active he is.

“If one of the residents was going to do that, he is going to do it,” Castro said. “He is kind of always on the go.”
