In Focus: Break time

I feel like summer has barely started, and yet here we are, the beginning of the high school football season.

The IHSA allowed teams to begin their official practices Monday morning. I started my day off by heading to Geneva’s Good Templar Park, where the Geneva Vikings would be practicing.

The high school has started its season off-site since I can remember.

The first day of football has historically been hot. Really hot, and sticky.

With this year’s weather relatively mild, I knew I would need some extra bug spray protection before I headed through the woods and down a hill from the parking area to the makeshift football field.

So, I slipped and slid down the muddy hill to the practice area. By the time I got down there, the team was already sprinting back and forth across the field.

I have found that water breaks for the team are usually visually compelling and a good way to tell the story of the first day.

These boys were clearly tired, hot and thirsty after their first hour of practice.
