GENEVA – Panera Bread at 1492 S. Randall Road plans to relocate to the now closed Applebee’s restaurant, 1690 S. Randall Road, in order to have enough room to put in a drive-thru, a company spokesman said.

The move would not happen until next summer, said Eve Metheny, director of brand marketing for Hamra Enterprises, which operates 33 Panera Bread cafes in the Chicago area.

“With Midwest weather – real winter – especially with families,” Metheny said. “If you have two kids and a mom you want convenience. You don’t want them not to visit because they have kids or it’s a winter day.”

Metheny said she did not know if the 5,000-square-foot building would have to be remodeled, retrofitted or torn down to be repurposed for Panera.

“It’s a great building,” Metheny said. “I think it’s a great location. The current one has limited parking during lunch and dinner, our peak time. This [new location] will be really great for our customers.”
