Man arrested, charged with drinking at Batavia elementary school

BATAVIA - Stephen A. Wake, 65, of the 2900 block of Arbor Lane, Aurora, has been charged with two counts of driving under the influence of alcohol following an incident at H.C. Storm Elementary School Monday afternoon.

According to a Batavia Police Department press release, officers were first called to the school at 304 N. Van Nortwick Ave. at 3:31 p.m. for a report of an individual, later identified as Wake, drinking a bottle of wine at the soccer field at H.C. Storm.

The incident happened as school was being dismissed for the day. Police cited Wake for having open liquor in a public place. He told police a friend had dropped him off and that he was watching soccer practice.

At 4:11 p.m., police officers were again called to the school after Wake drove his 2012 Chevrolet Equinox onto the playground located on the school's south side, according to the release. He failed standardized field sobriety tests and was arrested, police said.

According to the press release, his blood-alcohol level was above the state's legal limit of 0.08. He was released from custody after posting bail and a court hearing is set for Sept. 17.
