BATAVIA – Batavia 1st Ward Alderman Garran Sparks announced at Monday’s Batavia City Council meeting that he is resigning from the City Council because he is moving to North Aurora.

Monday was his last meeting. Sparks first was elected to the City Council in 2005.

“North Aurora’s gain is Batavia’s loss,” Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke said. “You’ve been a very hard-working, contributing team player. I appreciate all you’ve done.”

Sparks’ term expires in April. Schielke and the City Council will appoint someone to fill the seat until April.

After the City Council formally accepts his resignation, applications will be accepted from those looking to fill the seat.

Sparks also is known in the community for his lavish Christmas displays at his home on Bluestem Lane in Batavia.

The display also served as a way to raise donations for the Batavia Interfaith Food Pantry.
