ROCKFORD – The St. Charles North boys soccer team broke open a close match with five goals in the second half Monday as the North Stars ripped Rockford East, 6-1, in their season opener.

North led the non-conference match, 1-0, at halftime. David Gorniak scored two goals while Lorenzo Estrada, Chris Watson, Zach Morgando and Ryan Olson also scored for the North Stars.

"Obviously we were happy with the start [to the season] we got off to," North coach Eric Willson said. "I thought offensively we did a lot of nice things but I think what probably stood out most to me was our intensity on the defensive end. We were pretty good with our defensive pressure, and that caused a lot of turnovers and led to some good goal-scoring opportunities for us."

The match was originally supposed to be played in St. Charles but Willson said it was shifted to Rockford as field condition woes at North and the ability to accommodate playing a lower-level game led to the venue change.

GIRLS TENNIS

York 7, Batavia 3: At Elmhurst, Kate McClure gave Batavia its lone singles win, triumphing 6-2, 6-4, at No. 3 singles in the Bulldogs' season opener. The Bulldogs also got wins at No. 2 doubles from Holley Smorczewski and Maddie Rea and at No. 3 doubles from Shannon Gloudeman and Megan Garvin, who won a third-setter tiebreaker.

BOYS GOLF

Lake Park Quadrangular: At Medinah Golf Course, St. Charles North's team score of 165 trailed behind victorious Glenbard South (149), Glenbard West (161) and Lake Park (164). Trevor Kurtzhals, Michael Staszcuk and Liam Smith each shot 5-over rounds of 41 for North, while Hank Zimmer contributed a 42. Russell Matos of Glenbard South was medalist with a 2-under 34.
