WHEATON – A sluggish start gave way to a smooth finish for the St. Charles East girls volleyball team in Tuesday's season opener.
The Saints recovered for a 17-25, 25-21, 25-16 victory at Wheaton North, relying on good defense and balance down the stretch.
"We started out really slow. Wheaton North is a good team," Saints coach Jennie Kull said. "Our kids hadn't seen the quick [offense] that they ran in the middle, so it took us a game to get accustomed to what they were running."
Once that happened, Anne Hughes (14 digs) and Mikaela Mosquera (10 assists) were among those leading the way. Megan Schildmeyer (14 assists) and Emily Schildmeyer (four blocks) also shined.
"We passed really well and we played defense, good ball control," Kull said. "It's a good start to have that."
St. Charles North 2, York 1 (20-25, 25-20, 25-18): At St. Charles, Jaclyn Taylor (12 assists) and Taryn DalDegan (10) sparked a balanced North attack that included Daley Krage (12 kills), Emily Carroll (eight) and Claire Anderson (eight).
Geneva 2, Glenbard East 0: At Lombard, Jason Lagger tallied a pair of second half goals to propel Geneva in its season opener. Duncan Turnball made four saves to earn the shutout.
Batavia 1, Bartlett 0: At Millennium Field in Streamwood, Davis DiBiase scored on a feed from Ian Larson to boost Batavia in the Upstate Eight Conference crossover.
St. Charles North 1, South Elgin 1: At South Elgin, North conceded the equalizer with 26 seconds to play in the UEC crossover. Nick Graham scored for the 1-0-1 North Stars.
Burlington Central 7, Rockford Lutheran 0: At Rockford, Chris Lebrecht (two goals) boosted Central in its opener, while Ryan Fitzgerald made two saves.
Kaneland 157, DeKalb 158: At Hughes Creek in Elburn, Kaneland edged its Northern Illinois Big 12 East rival behind medalist Jake Hed's 1-over 37.
Wheaton Academy 154, Walther Christian 214: At Pheasant Run in St. Charles, Grant Gosden (36) and Zack Spear (38) paced Wheaton Academy.
St. Charles North 162, Elgin 272: At The Highlands of Elgin, standout North sophomores Kate Lillie (34) and Gianna Furrie (35) helped the North Stars cruise.
Metea Valley 5, St. Charles North 2: At Aurora, North netted its lone victories at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles, behind the respective pairs of Lianne Anderson/Emma Spellman and Morgan Rerko/Brittany Rohrsen.
Rosary 4, Oswego 3: At Oswego, Rosary swept doubles play to earn a road dual victory in its season opener. The top tandem of Megan Conlin and Alexis Thomas won, 6-1, 6-4. At No. 3 doubles, the Royals' Grace Goheen and Bella Duarte won, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.
Wheaton Academy 4, South Elgin 3: At West Chicago, Wheaton Academy won its opener behind a doubles sweep. Wayne resident Maisie Howland teamed with Lily Bracie for a 6-2, 6-1 win at the No. 1 spot.
