PLATO TOWNSHIP – A 67-year-old Rochelle woman died Wednesday in a two-vehicle crash that took place near Hampshire, according to a news release issued by the Kane County Sheriff's Office.
At about 3:45 p.m. Wednesday, deputies responded to reports of a crash involving a car and a semi-tractor trailer. According to the release, responding deputies were advised that the car was on fire. The incident took place near the intersection of Plank and Switzer roads.
Faith Huml, 67, of Rochelle, was pronounced dead at the scene, the release states. She was driving a 2005 GMC Yukon. The other driver, Paul Holcomb, 58, of Rockford was driving the truck. He was hospitalized with injuries that were not life-threatening.
According to police, the initial investigation indicates that the Yukon was traveling east on Plank Road, and for an unknown reason, it left the road on south side of Plank Road. The Yukon re-entered Plank Road and struck a 2004 Freightliner semi-tractor that was traveling west on Plank Road.
According to the release, the truck and Yukon both left the road and came to a rest on the south side of Plank Road. At some point, the Yukon caught fire, according to police. Huml, the sole occupant of the Yukon, was pronounced deceased at the scene. Holcomb was the sole occupant of the truck, police stated.
Kane County Sheriff’s detectives and members of the Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team are continuing to investigate the cause of the crash, according to the release. No tickets have been issued.
As of 9:30 p.m., Plank Road remained closed between Murihead and Switzer roads while the crash was being investigated.
