Elburn bowler Mabel Cummins ready to Strike for Vets

ELBURN – Mabel Cummins has had plenty of individual success as a bowler.

On Oct. 16 she will put that skill to work for a good cause.

The Elburn resident will play a prominent part in the Strike for Vets charity bowling tournament at Fox Bowl in Wheaton on Oct. 16.

Proceeds from the event will go to the Fisher House at Edward Hines VA Hospital in Maywood, which provides free lodging for military families during medical crises. At this “comfort home,” the only one in Illinois, military families can be close to their loved one during hospitalization for illness, disease or injury.

Thirty teams are scheduled to compete in the four-game tournament at Fox Bowl. The event will feature appearances by local Professional Bowlers Association members, including Diandra Asbaty, Bill Spigner, Gregg Zicha, Michael Nape Jr. and A.J. Johnson. They will coach teams and sign autographs.

Chicago sports pros also will be on hand to participate and meet with fans. Dan Pasqua, a former Chicago White Sox player, Macey Brooks, a former Chicago Bears receiver, and Tracy Wilson Jr., a former Tennessee Titans player, are expected to attend.

The Strike for Vets event will be just the latest in a long line of bowling highlights for Cummins.

In the summer she was the United States Bowling Congress U15 girls national champion, a showing that helped her become the youngest girl on USBC Junior Team USA.
