High school boys golf: Kaneland's Will Marshall wins regional, Marmion takes team title over Knights

St. Francis earns team berth at sectional, six from Wheaton Academy move on

ELBURN – Will Marshall shot a 68 and won the title at the Class 2A Kaneland boys golf regional at Hughes Creek on Oct. 4.

Marshall's score was four strokes better than 72s shot by Marmion's Nick Huggins and Aurora Central Catholic's Mac Cowen, but Kaneland had to settle for second as team.

Marmion had a 302 team score to edge Kaneland (305). St. Francis was third as a team with a 312.

Consistent scoring lifted the Cadets to the title. In addition to Huggins' 72, the Cadets counted Jimmy Morton's 74, Peter Thayer's 77 and Sean Regan's 79 for the team score. Austen Vazquez and Henry Pierce each shot an 86 for Marmion.

After Marshall's 68, Brett Glennon (77), Jake Hed (79) and Jacob Milton (81) counted for the Knights. Brock Williams (85) and Jeff VanGemert (92) also played in the regional for Kaneland.

Luke Armbrust (75), Logan Rayburn (78) and Kevin Doherty (79) all shot in the 70s and Nick Armbrust added an 80 for St. Francis, while Ryan Keefe (81) and Jared Riesenberg (89) also played in the regional.

Wheaton Academy missed out on qualifying for the sectional tourney as a team, but sent all six golfers on to the sectional.

Kyle Bertsche (74), Peter Crowe (83), Jack Dykema (84), David Frank (87), Thomas Love (88) and Sean Reid (88) were among the top 10 individuals not on qualifying teams to make it to the sectional.

Aurora Central Catholic's Nathan Turco (83) was also an individual sectional qualifier.

The next stop for the Cadets, Knights, Spartans and qualifying individuals is the the St. Viator sectional on Oct. 10. The top three teams and top 10 individuals not on the top three teams will all advance to the state tournament on Oct. 14 and 15.
