Janeen Home Decor shuts store, keeps business in Geneva

GENEVA – After seven years at 215 W. State St. in Geneva, Janeen Home Decor is closing, owner Janeen O’Brien said – but only the physical store is closing.

“I’m going to continue what I do, minus the store,” O’Brien said. "I do interior design, and I stage for Realtors to sell homes. Or if people ask me to come out and stage their house for a sale."

Homeowners also hire her to enhance their house, she said, seeking advice on changing the paint color or lighting fixtures.

“I like to call myself ‘the finishing girl.’ I like to finish up the home after the furniture is there,” O’Brien said. “My love is accessorizing. I sell lighting, art, my silk florals, mirrors. All the things that give the home the personality. That is what I love to do.”

The store’s last official day is Feb. 25, she said.

“I’ve been so blessed all these years, with customers turning into friends and people stopping in to visit,” O’Brien said. “Retail is not that great any more. Everybody is online. Visitors and tourists come, but they can’t carry you a whole year, and it’s the overhead that gets you. I’m out.”

O’Brien said she will rent a small space at another interior design business, Starmen Galleries, 33W239 Roosevelt Road, Geneva Township, to use as her office and workshop, and she will see clients by appointment.

Her company name and phone number – 630-232-7885 – will remain the same, O’Brien said, and eventually her website, www.janeenhomedecor.com, and Facebook will be updated to reflect the change.
