From the Student Desk: St. Charles East girls water polo team to host fundraiser game

Over the course of my high school career, I have attended many fundraisers. They were all amazing, but one of the most memorable was a fundraiser that the St. Charles East High School water polo team ran in honor of those with cystic fibrosis. I think the best part was knowing that we were helping and bringing attention to a disease that not a ton of people know about.

Cystic fibrosis is a disease that is rarely talked about; however, that doesn’t mean that people in our community aren’t affected by it. Cystic fibrosis is an incurable disease that causes persistent lung problems, according to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s website, www.cff.org. So, of course, it is a tragedy when someone is diagnosed with it.

The St. Charles East girls water polo team is hosting a fundraiser game in support of helping those with cystic fibrosis.

“One of our athletes knows somebody that has cystic fibrosis, so last year we started supporting in honor of her,” explained Stephanie TerBush, the girl’s head water polo coach.

The game is taking place at the Norris Recreation Center, 1050 Dunham Road, St. Charles. The junior varsity game is from 5 to 6 p.m., and the varsity game is from 6 to 7 p.m. May 1.

In support of those suffering from cystic fibrosis, the girls water polo team is also selling shirts. For a long sleeve shirt, the cost is $20, and a short sleeve shirt is $15. For each shirt purchased, the team is donating $5 toward helping those with cystic fibrosis. The team is also accepting donations before and at the game. For more information, contact Stephanie TerBush at stephanie.terbush@d303.org.

“It’s just a really cool event that would be awesome if you guys came out to support,” TerBush said.

Personally, I think the team does an amazing job with the event. I played on the team last year, when the fundraiser game first started, and the event was absolutely amazing.

Water polo isn’t exactly a sport that has all of the bleachers packed, but at the cystic fibrosis game there wasn’t an empty row on the pool deck. Everyone gets involved, including the opposing team. It’s truly amazing to see how the community can come together to raise money for such an astounding cause.
