BATAVIA – A new event for runners will debut in tandem with the return of the farmers market outdoors on North River Street and a freshly reimagined WellBatavia expo, all happening June 3.
The Race to Market 5K at 7:30 a.m. is the first such event to be presented by Batavia MainStreet, Executive Director Jamie Saam said, noting the certified course will follow a scenic riverside route north on the east bank, crossing the Fox River at the Fabyan Villa Museum and turning back south to the Peg Bond Center.
For a whimsical touch in keeping with the day’s healthful theme, participants will share the path with running vegetables thanks to costumes from All Dressed Up.
Joining the racers, there should be a jogging carrot and probably grapes and a tomato or two, Saam said.
“The 5K starts on North River Street, where the vendor booths end at River and State [streets],” Saam said.
To ensure a race T-shirt in the right size, people should register by May 16 at downtownbatavia.com. Entry costs $25 per individual, with a $20 student and family rate. The event will be timed officially through Race Time, and there will be prizes for males and females in various age categories from children through adult.
A Batavia MainStreet volunteer-led committee will help arrange staffing, but added volunteers from the community are always welcome. The organization hopes to draw 300 participants for the inaugural 5K, which is part of the 2017 Fox River Trail Runners race circuit.
Proceeds will help support the day’s events and all of Batavia MainStreet’s programming for the community.
Saam said aspects of Green Fair on the Fox will be part of the new WellBatavia expo from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Batavia MainStreet is partnering with the park district, which will present fitness classes as part of the lineup.
Featuring screenings, presentations and vendors, the event will have five focuses: prevention, including health screenings; healthy practices; alternative medicine; free fitness classes, with registration requested; and Healthy World, previously the Green Fair On the Fox, an eco-marketplace in which local businesses and organizations emphasize a healthy world and sustainable living.
The Batavia Farmers Market will run from 8 a.m. to noon, and until June 3, the winter market continues Saturdays inside Gaetano’s at North River and Wilson streets. For information on the June 3 activities, visit Batavia MainStreet’s website at downtownbatavia.com or call 630-761-3528.
