BATAVIA – By May 12, demolition of the former First Street Church in Batavia may be complete, according to estimates from the wrecking crew.
A light rain the afternoon of May 10 did not deter the team razing the late-1800s church, in whose place the One Washington Place development is intended to rise. Water damage and a deteriorated roof had weakened the church's structure.
The proposed redevelopment project will cover about three-quarters of the city block bounded by North Washington Avenue and East Wilson, State and North River streets. It will include 186 apartments, a 350-space parking garage and more than 14,000 square feet of retail space.
