ST. CHARLES – A motorcyclist was going so fast that his bike disintegrated when it crashed into a car. The crash spun the car 180 degrees and sent a cloud of debris and vapor 25 feet in the air, according to sheriff’s reports.
Justin S. Barone, 23, of the 600 block of East Thornwood Drive, South Elgin, was charged May 9 with reckless driving with wanton disregard for the safety of persons or property, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, driving without insurance and driving with an expired registration, reports stated.
A St. Charles police officer told sheriff’s deputies that someone on a Yamaha YZF-R6 passed him near Dean Street and 15th Street shortly before 9:30 p.m. doing a wheelie, and he turned around, put his lights on and started to follow, reports stated.
But the motorcycle accelerated at such a high rate of speed, that it was too dangerous for the officer to attempt a pursuit, reports stated.
The St. Charles officer lost sight of the Yamaha where Dean Street turns south leading to Ninth Street, but he could hear it continue to accelerate and heard the crash, which occurred at West Main Street and 13th Street, reports stated.
Barone’s motorcycle crashed into the left rear corner panel of a gray 1999 Toyota Avalon, shattered on impact and spun the car around 180 degrees, reports stated.
Police recovered a GoPro camera and helmet 100 yards west of the crash site and secured it for evidence, reports stated.
Both Barone and the Avalon’s driver were taken to Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital in Geneva, reports stated.
One witness, who saw the crash through his rearview mirror, told police he saw a cloud of debris rise into the air after the impact, reports stated. Another witness said he saw a cloud of debris and vapor go 25 feet into the air, reports stated.
The driver of the Avalon told police he had just pulled out from a driveway on Main Street, and – after looking both ways – made a left turn and had almost crossed the inside westbound lane when the motorcycle hit, reports stated.
St. Charles police said the Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team is investigating the crash.
