High school baseball: Quite the finishing kick for Marmion

Marmion baseball closes strong to take home state trophy

JOLIET – The old saying goes, 'It's not how you start, it's how you finish.'

If there was a personification of that saying, it was Marmion's baseball team this spring.

An eight-game skid (albeit a slide that included losses against powerhouse programs like Brother Rice, Mt. Carmel, Providence and St. Laurence) had the Cadets sitting at 12-15 a little over a week before the Class 3A postseason started.

Marmion proceeded to win nine of its next 10 games, including a 6-3 win against Morton in a supersectional game June 5, a victory that clinched a state berth and locked up the program's first state trophy. From May 12 to June 10, the Cadets went 10-2 to close out the season.

It was quite the way to go out for seniors Nick Brummel, Collin Gibson, Zack Lentz, Bobby Pierce and Trevor Taus, and with a majority of the roster slated to return, the 2018 season could have more in store for Marmion.
