The Kane County Chronicle, Elburn Herald and Sugar Grove Herald welcomed a new local editor last month.
Zachary Van Vuren started June 16. He will oversee our coverage of Elburn, Sugar Grove, Maple Park and Kaneville.
A graduate of Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind., Zack majored in professional writing and minored in communications and philosophy.
He said he got into journalism because he enjoys writing.
“And there’s always something new,” he said.
He said the news team here is “highly energetic,” and that it’s “refreshing” to cover the areas in western Kane County as he comes from similar communities.
Zack has been getting to know the area and its people by making phone calls, sending emails, setting up meetings and attending events.
“I hope to increase the coverage of the Elburn and Sugar Grove areas,” he said.
He believes that newspapers are as vital as ever, but that they are evolving as consumption of online news is growing.
“I look forward to getting to know the Elburn, Sugar Grove, Maple Park and Kaneville communities, their organizations and the people that live within the area,” he said.
As far as his role as editor goes, Zack hopes to fine-tune his writing skills and try to make the writers he works with even better.
Since being here, he has learned that Shaw Media – the company that owns the Kane County Chronicle, Elburn Herald and Sugar Grove Herald – is one of the oldest in the country. And he has learned that the Elburn Lions Club is one of the largest Lions clubs in the U.S.
