The Kane County Chronicle, Elburn Herald and Sugar Grove Herald have welcomed a new intern.
Eva Hartigan, a senior at St. Charles North High School, started with us in mid-September, and she already has been helping out in the newsroom.
I sat down with Eva to ask her a few questions about why she wanted to intern with us and other topics. The following is an edited transcript of our conversation.
Kathy Balcazar: Tell me why you wanted to be an intern here?
Eva Hartigan: I wanted to get a leg up on my education and kind of have an edge on my applications by saying I did an internship for writing. I’m really passionate about writing. I just love the idea of getting the truth out there. … I like the idea of serving the community, in a sense, by making sure everyone is informed and caring about stories.
Balcazar: You’ve been here for a few weeks now. Can you tell our readers a little bit about what you’ve been doing?
Hartigan: I wrote an accuracy essay, and I’ve just been doing some short briefs … and getting to know people in the office and really enjoying my time so far because everyone has been really nice to me and I appreciate them so much.
Balcazar: What is your goal for the end of this internship? What do you hope to accomplish?
Hartigan: I hope to have some articles that I’m really proud of. I hope to write something about some of my interests and do them justice. For instance, I’m really into slam poetry and maybe the local music scene, things like that.
Balcazar: Any thoughts on college yet?
Hartigan: Yeah, I’m looking at Wesleyan [University] in Connecticut and Brandeis [University near] Boston. So, those are my top two.
Balcazar: Sitting here right now, what do you hope to do for a full-time job?
Hartigan: Right now, I have no idea. I’m probably going to go into something with English, literature or the social sciences, like sociology or psychology.
Balcazar: If you had to describe being in our newsroom in one word, what would that be?
Hartigan: Compassion – because I think you guys have a lot of compassion for the people that you talk to and the work that you do and in everything that you do. I think you guys just prove that you care.
