Siblings make sweet haul of candy for the troops

BATAVIA – More than 700 pounds of donated candy were collected by Abby Anderson, 10, and her brother, Bradley, 12, of Batavia to benefit the troops and first responders.

The children, who attend Western Avenue School in Geneva and Geneva Middle School North, gathered 735 pounds of candy, of which 100 pounds were dropped off at Batavia Parcel, a second donation site for the project. The other site was the children's home.

"Kiwanis donated 49 pounds of individually wrapped peanuts and gummy bears," said their mother, Heather Anderson, in an email about the project results. "Trader Joe’s dropped off 600 lollipops, and we also received six letters for our troops. We will have all this shipped out by [Nov. 7 or 8]."

Last year, the children collected 226 pounds with the help of the community and area businesses. During the Halloween season, the young duo annually seeks unopened candy, gum and mints to be included in care packages sent by Operation Gratitude.
